Small Things
Many of us are very fortunate as we never faced a problem in our upbringing.Everything was there.Education, food, home and love. But why do we forget that there are million others who are not. Many of our actions appear small to us.Small things which aren't suppose to make a difference.Well apparently they do.
We are so casual with the way we use electricity. We never make an effort to save it.We have lots of money in our damn pockets to pay the bills for it.In government offices, institutes or hostels people waste resources to the fullest and then curse the way things are around them. Here at kgp, how many of us switch off our computers, lights and fans when we are not in our rooms ? The numbers are shockingly small. And when someone tries to make this point to someone else, the other just rejects the whole thing saying," Why do you care? You aren't the one paying bills around here ! ".Pathetic.People feel its to much for them to switch off the lights every time they go out, but they very much like to do that for the earth hour.Pretending to care.Disgusting.The government is unable to light up the rural areas as all the electrical resources are just enough to suffice the urban population. At least, save some for them.
We like to keep our houses clean. We like our things systematically arranged. But when we go out, we leave our sense of cleanliness and decorum at home.We are messy. We just don't bother anymore."There are people to clean the roads, why should we care? ".Again, pathetic.A typical scene at a railway station; people eating packeted food and throwing away the non-biodegradable polythene bags on the floor when there is a big container just besides them provided by our government stating USE ME ! But all in vain. Its just too much of an effort for people. They are unable to see the bigger picture. They are unable to access the intensity with which these little acts of negligence will hit us back. And that too, very soon.Planet Earth is our home too.Do care about it.
People nowadays are fashion conscious. They believe in brands. They flaunt it. They are willing to spend huge bucks for anything which is made by NIKE or GUCCI or zillion other ones.Just imagine the amount of money spent by the upper and middle class on clothing.Compare it with the money required to provide cloths to the poor who don't even have something to cover their clad bodies.I am not judging.Just making a point. We buy and soon we throw them away so that we can buy them again. And again. And the same goes for many other things. It would do a lot actually if you just throw it at the right place where the one in need can have them. There are many NGO's which do this for us.Is it really too much for you to contact them?
I feel that the culprit is ignorance. It's the root of all this.So if we educated ones can help those in darkness understand, it would surely change they way things are. These are really small things for us.But they do make a difference .And it will surely make this world a better place.

an absolute need of the hour....educating people.i got quite a few raised eyebrows when i asked an "uncle" to not throw his masala packet on the floor in the metro today!!! also, yeah the otherwise uncaring ppl tend to become conscious wen there are things like earth hour etc, its fashionable u see.oh and the funny part abt branded stuff is that not only do we pay a humoungous amount to get em, we also do free publicity for the product(with every item flaunting its brand name)!! stupid we are.
p.s-err mmm i use a few brands, but i m a good, conscious citizen!!:)
Your P.S. goes for me as well :) ....and about getting raised eyebrows when you tell someone they have wronged.... it will happen most of the time....but even if we change one person ...it will do...he might change someone else and the butterfly effect begins :) ...and yeah....am still pretending that i don't know your name :P
hmmm....
and yeah thankyou! *grateful smile* :)..lol
hey ..fantastic post genie :)
quite motivational..& i ttly agree wid u...specially abt dat..'brand' thing.. !!!!
This one is really really gud..totally agree with u & proud of u genie.. for having such wonderful thoughts ..& being a responsible citizen. :)
@ankita ......or shud i say professor sahiba :P ...thanku :)
@jeni :)
i am glad that you totally agree with me this time... and actually thank you ! All this would have not been there...if not for you :)
yaaar its so damn true....but the culprit is not totally ignorance of people....it is in the administration also.
for eg if we install a meter monitor in each of our rooms and pay accordingly, how many of us would really "not care" of leaving comps on all the time
People misuse onli that stuff which comes from free....they become shrewd once they realize they have to pay for it.... we dirty our streets, but not where we live.... yes we are ignorant, that the wastage we are causing comes from the community (hall for us) funds....which we guys only have to pay.But its...well....the mentality...
Nice blog and i am a regular visitor :)

Hey Swapnil,
I completely agree with you on this one.I have tried to change my habits a lot (espeically the garbage throwing part or the light or water saving habits). However, the change started only when I travelled abroad and I have not been able to inspire a single person to do the same.
I have doubts whether such efforts change the larger picture at all.
Two things are absolutely necessary for a mass movement in such cases:
1. Intensity/ Desire to Succeed
2. Clarity of Goals
And with small changes in our lives, we are not making any of the two points. So, When we do it, we also need to talk about it as you did. If your post can change habits of even a single person on this planet, thats a big achievement, I would say.
Keep blogging
@ vaibhav.... well how much is the government suppose to do ? With such huge huge population.... the job is very difficult....i mean for every wrong act if we accuse the govt that since there was so formal rule about it ...and consider ourselves not guilty....so not done ! Why can't we change ourselves ? That's not very difficult........is it ?
@ Sid
Changing the larger picture...that's the dream ..sometimes I wonder if it comes true...Oh my God ! what a place that would be...aah ! Anyways, yeah to make it happen we need to do something...what something ...am trying to figure out !
Great posts! Hope this one helps the situation to some extent. :) at least many will think of shutting down their computers when they are not in the room...
